Cell What?

I have a 14-year-old (yes, just today) who feels she has dinosaurs for parents. ROAAAAAR (in my best T-Rex voice).

She can't have a cell phone. To her credit she has stopped asking. I thought I was fine for another couple years until Brandon dares to ask. What I was NOT expecting was this...

Alexis (just barely eight): Mom, if I saved my money...

Me: Uh hum?

Alexis: ...until I got about 50 bucks...

Me (tuning my antennas a little): yep?

Alexis: ...could I go to the dollar store...

Me (50 bucks? yeah right!): And?

Alexis: ...and buy a cellphone?

Me: Um, let me think about it for a min...No.

Alexis: BUT I am the ONLY one in my class who doesn't have one. EVERYONE in second grade has one. AND...everyone in my class can get on the internet whenever they want too. Why can't I get on the internet when I want? Yadda, yadda, yadda.

ROAAAAAR!

Should I just give in already?

I'm starting to face those kind of things too. Although Jeremy hasn't asked for a cell phone yet (he's only 6) he has asked to do some other things that just blow me away. My kids will probably be the most uncool in school.

I guess we have the un-coolest kids in school too. Even my high schooler's don't have cell phones. I wish we lived closer to you and they could all be un-cool together. :D I know it's hard for them to understand now why we don't let them have/do whatever they want, but I'm confident that one day they'll thank us. At least I hope so. The internet is a blessing but also a huge wide-open doorway to you know where! Stay strong! Knowing that a few of my friends are dealing with this same predicament will definitely help me stay strong and firm as well. I can't tell you how many times I've almost "caved in" and let them each get a phone, because all MY friends kid's have their own, but I'm glad I didn't.

Wow! Cell phones in the second grade? I thought it was sort of weird that my neighbor just got her 11 year old son a cell phone. I guess Jon and I are dinosaurs too. And to answer your question, no I don't think you ought to give in. First, think of the money you are saving by forcing your kids to use the good old fashioned lan lines and two? again I repeat 2nd graders with cell phones? 11 year olds? 14? wow. I dunno. Now 16 years old? Sure I can definitely see a possible need for a cell phone when a child turns 16. This is my own opinion though, do with it what you want.

We'll all be dinos together. Of course my kids are still young, but, they will be the uncool kids in school as well. I am with ya, Krissy. Some day our kids will thank us for not 'caving'.

My kids ask me about getting cell phones all the time. My response...I would only get you a cell phone to call me on...and since you are always with me (except at school where you can't use them)I guess there is no need, it always burns their biscuit. Your not the only stone-age Mom!

Rots o' ruck to ya! I am the same as you with Internet time, cell phone thing, etc. But, it would be nice to know you can get hold of them (the high schooler) at any time, especially when a curfew is a little "avoided;" but the whole non-stop texting thing is what really gets to me. Don't get me wrong, I DO like to text, but I can put it down and be okay without it for a few minutes. I'm totally down with being uncool! :)

Ok, seriously! Hayden started asking a couple of weeks ago...he's 9! For real! I'm fighting it with the 12 year old already. I don't know how we ever survived our own childhoods without them. I had a period when she wanted a cell phone, heely's, a Nintendo DS (when she already had a gameboy) and and Ipod...ALL of her friends had ALL of them. Aren't we mean?

Don't do it. Regrets! Learn from me. DON'T do it. My younger kids are NOT going to get one.
