Who is to say that 2 wrongs don't make a right?

After moving to a new ward it is not long before you are asked the infamous question, "what were your previous callings in your old ward?" When asked this question one Sunday evening by the visiting bishopric, I babbled off a list of callings and then with all the Nephiness I had, I let them know I was taught by a valiant mother that all callings were from God and that I should never turn one down. That being said, I let them know I was willing to serve where ever except for primary, nursery, anything that would require public speaking and/or especially scouts I was needed. I am sure they left my home thinking I was the best thing that came to their ward in a long time as they thought of all the callings nobody else wanted to do.

When it comes to scouts, I am LOST. Somehow my only son made it through each den, passed off all his requirements and made it out of cub scouts and into boy scouts while I rode an oblivious ride right along side of him. He always had amazing leaders who knew exactly what he needed. I thanked my lucky stars for them as I. was. clueless. When the call came, I almost panicked. I came this close to declining my first calling. Didn't they know that I can't tell bears from wolves and bobcats from tigers? "Sister Smith would you be willing to work as an assistant to the (I think he said Weblos, I am still not even sure) den leader for the scouts?"

Ok, to the point of the story. I, of course (did you doubt me?), accepted this calling and went to my first meeting with the boys. Off to the fire station we went to learn about first aid. Awe this is right down my alley, a field trip with 8-10 rowdy boys learning about blood and gore. I think I can handle this. As the boys piled into the cars, I wondered if they were going to like me (cause that is important to me you know). The ride started out quiet, nobody really knowing what to say. I finally asked them each their names and I heard some snickering from the back. The ring leader older boy in the front seat made some gestures to the boys in the back to follow his lead and he gave me what I knew was the wrong name. Following him, each of the other boys gave me a wrong name too. They thought they were pretty funny, BUT! I am way funnier! "Nice to meet each of you! I am Bertha Lou Magilicuty. We are going to have so much fun!" Even though I was driving I could not have missed the whites of their eyes for anything. They tried to suppress their smiles, but the giggles were not to be held onto. I tried to feign hurt feelings and when their giggles quickly cut off and they tried to be serious, I started giggling too.

Leader of the pack: "Um, those weren't really our names."

Me: "Mine either!" (We won't tell them that I wonder if it is sometimes.)

The laughter ensued until we reached the fire station. I made some great little buddies that day and had a lot of fun. As to whether I am going to like it or not? I don't really know. But I am where I am supposed to be. I am in this calling for a purpose that I may not know for years to come, but I am here... or as Nephi put it so eloquently, ... I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.

You are so much better than me Bon! I was always on the same path as you and just took the calling given to me, even when they called me in the same position as yours the scouts, the Bears. Oh my word I think it was God preparing me for the house full of boys I am raising. I was insane! I dreaded every Tuesday that came around for us. Long story short...I am now ok with telling them NOOOO to a calling and I have and like you they are soo happy to have me in this ward - NOT (ok so maybe when I go to church that is). Bon, thanks for being such a great example to me, I will pray each day that I will be more diligent as you are in God's callings and getting my family to church each week of the month.

Don't you know that if you or someone else says a fake name more than 46 times, it becomes your real name. According to my calculations, you are around 43. Bertha. Bertha. Bertha.

Have fun in scouts Sister Magilicuty.

I love your blog! You are still always good for a great chuckle, chortle and snort! :D I love that you love life! I know those boys will have a blast! Besides, you need to start weeding out the ones who will and won't be allowed to date those cute girls of yours a few years down the road.....

I was scout leader over the wolves, bears, and we'llbeloyals (webelos) because between them all we had only about 5 boys, and I was overwhelmed and unprepared, and had nobody to delegate to but myself. When I was called to be relief society president after that, I wept for joy. It was easier to fill that calling by a long shot! Since that time, (about 14 years ago), I have been the scout leader 2 more times(when Andrew and Isaiah became scout age) plus the Primary counselor in charge of scouting. Nothing is funner though than getting your eagle rank (er..umm.. I mean watching your son achieve his eagle rank). You will know exactly what I am implying when you get there...

Just wait, pretty soon all your blogs will be about scouts. We'll be reading about arrow of light ceremonies, advancements, badges, etc, etc.

Hey Kelly, just remember baby steps...you can do it.

Pip, Bertha became my second identity when I was a baby. I was ashamed before, but now I embrace it...

Kristen, my girls already ask if they can come. For the boys'sake I tell them no.

Shellie, you give me no hope.

Abby, I will try not to bore you with too many more scout details :).

Oh Bonnie, how I laughed when you got your calling, and then subsequently Dave mentioned that Robert's name had been submitted for the 11 year old scouts...(I cannot even tell you how excited he is to have Robert there!) Dave has been involved in Scouts for as long as we have been married, and there is so much good and fun. Especially this ward, you are going tohave a BLAST with these kids!
PS>>>we need some face to face time...I mean, come on we only live what 2 blocks away from each other?

Oh, Bertha, you did learn something good from your mother, and someday in the far future you may even thank me. I love you and so does your Heavenly Father. WoW

I don't feel for you at all. I have been the wolf leader, bear leader, back to wolf and NOW the bear leader here in CO. It has been 5 years! Almost anyway! I love that calling and as long as they don't call me to Webelos, AND let me out of scouts when younger twins turn 11, I will gladly go back to primary. Maybe.

Call me....we'll talk scouts, I mean sister stuff.

I'm sorry... I mean, uh, congratulations on your new calling! ;-) I'm teasing, of course. I'm sure you'll do great. It sounds like you're off to a great start already. I'm pretty clueless about all that stuff, too, even though I also had a scout calling before, which didn't last very long (thankfully--bad timing, I think), and I didn't do anything more than go to a meeting once for new leaders. I am sure I'll learn more about it when my boys start cub scouts, but for now I'm perfectly content to know nothing. :-)

Jeremy is the scout master here; you two could talk scouts too! :-)
